Chronoi Talks: “Local Chronologies of Iraqi Kurdistan: Investigations at Qala Shila” (Hybrid)
December 15, 2022
3 - 4 pm (CET)
Venue: Einstein Center Chronoi (Otto-von-Simson-Straße 7, 14195 Berlin)
Recent archaeological fieldwork in the Transtigrine region of Iraq highlighted asynchronies in the developments of the Bronze Age cultures of Syria and Northern Iraq. Though the emergence of interregional political entities since the beginning of the second millennium BCE onwards provided elements of cultural synchronicities defining specific periods, an interregional chronology is far to be reached. Unfortunately, the lack of a fixed calibrated interregional chronology could not prevent from adopting a combination of metal-based and historical periodization systems. By presenting recent archaeological activities at Qala Shila in Iraqi Kurdistan, this Chronoi talk is aimed at the discussion of methods and problems in developing a regional chronology within the larger cultural framework of the periodization of the Ancient Near East.
