There are very different ways in which societies make temporal entanglements between the past and the present. The focus will be set on a special type of drawing such connections that might be called “telescopic genealogy.” What is meant by this is the creation of direct genealogical links between individuals or societies over long periods of time and/or from very different historical contexts. Telescopic genealogies make room for presenting individuals and societies as if they were contemporaneous, thereby disregarding or fading out the temporal distance between them. In this lecture, it will be demonstrated how this model of temporal entanglements was present in highly different historical contexts: ancient Mesopotamia and ‘classical modernity’.
