The project citadel of Sargon, initiated in 2019, is destined to assess the archaeological potential of the famous Assyrian capital city of Dur Sharrukin built by king Sargon II at the end of the VIII th century BC. Excavated by French archaeologists in the XIX th century and by the Oriental Institute of Chicago from 1929 to 1935, the archaeological site has been a victim of the recent conflicts in the region (occupation by Daesh, Battle of Mossul and subsequent developments), its history doesn’t limit itself to the single event of a great royal City foundation, still poorly understood and matter of debates among archaeologists and Assyriologists. The talk will focus on the different timelines which present themselves looking through the complex situation encountered on the field.
