Chronoi Talks: “Mandean Astrology against Cosmology? A Case of Resilience of Literary Traditions”

June 16, 2022

3 - 4 pm (CET)

Dr. Ionut Daniel Bancila

As a strategy of managing the precariousness of human life, ancient astrology often illustrated and expanded on structures of religious meaning-making (mythology, ritualization, esotericism etc.). My paper is addressing the question of how Mandaean astrology functioned in a religious setting that demonized the (influence of the) planets and which relations are there between the Mandean mythological / cosmological texts and (the practice of) Mandean astrology. This is attempted from the perspective of the resilience of literary traditions integrated in Mandean literature.
