January 23, 2025
3 - 4 pm (CET)
Venue:
Einstein Center Chronoi
Otto-von-Simson-Straße 7, 14195 Berlin
Hammurabi has been one of the most recognizable figures from ancient Mesopotamia for over two centuries. The discovery of his code of laws in 1901 brought Mesopotamian culture into the spotlight and contributed to the perception of Mesopotamia as the cradle of civilization in world history. However, the portrayal of Hammurabi as a significant historical figure has developed only recently, influenced by advancements in fieldwork and the intellectual growth within the emerging field of Ancient Near Eastern historiography. This talk aims to analyze the evolution of studies of Hammurabi and his era, exploring how modern historiography has shaped our understanding of this figure over the past century.
