Biography

Norman Sieroka is a trained philosopher and physicist. He teaches, does research, and publishes in the field of theoretical philosophy and philosophy of science. He devotes himself to questions about time, about perception (especially phenomenological approaches to hearing), about methods of the exact sciences, and about the historiography of philosophy and of the sciences. He is particularly interested in the relationship and interplay of different forms of time (e.g., experienced time, physical time) including their relationship to human well-being.

Project Abstract

This project investigates structural relationships between physical time and time as experienced. The most important object of study in this context will be hearing because auditory qualities are all and fundamentally based on temporal regularities.

My previous work focussed on auditory perception on a very basic level. My philosophical and empirical investigations have been mainly on the level of simple sounds and their perceptual qualities, such as duration and pitch. The present project will widen this previous work towards the perception of music and towards questions of rhythmic adjustment. Moreover, I recently discussed the relationship between time and well-being under the heading of "being in-tact". Again, the present project will widen and contextualise this preliminary study.

Apart from specific results about the perception and embodiment of music, the project is likely to contribute to overarching philosophical questions about time; in particular, about the general relationship between tensed and tenseless time orders.
