New Release: The Thebaid in Times of Crisis

A new volume in our De Gruyter book series has just been published and is now available in open access. The Thebaid in Times of Crisis: Revolt and Response in Ptolemaic Egypt, edited by Ralph Birk and Laurent Coulon, brings together research that examines societal crises––from local uprisings to large-scale secessions––in Hellenistic Egypt, with a focus on the Thebaid region.

This volume, which emerged from an international conference held at Freie Universität Berlin in 2019, explores how actors such as kings, queens, officials, and priests––as well as modern scholars of Ptolemaic Egypt––shaped and interpreted times of crisis. By integrating diverse sources, including temple epigraphy, Demotic texts, archaeology, numismatics, and private records, it offers fresh perspectives that go beyond traditional historiography.
